Goodbye trendy cupcake, there's new sweets in town. I've been on a sugar high, searching and sampling the best of what Calgary has to offer in desserts right now.
First stop, Jelly, the latest twist on the doughnut. Contrary to stereotypes about my husband's profession, doughnuts aren't really a front runner in our dessert lineup. But you marry words like, organic, gourmet, hand-crafted, and preservative free with a doughnut and I'm listening.
Jelly serves gourmet doughnuts in flavours like Madagascar bourbon vanilla, Banana chocolate chip and Peanut butter cup. Take them to-go or relax in their sleek and adorable, hot pink cafe.
On my first visit, I sampled the Classic jelly and S'mores variety. I also took a couple to-go: Maple bacon and Red velvet. What a day, what a place.
Next stop, Cruffs - The House of Cream Puffs in Mission. This little shop is filled with huge taste. You actually choose your flavours and they fill the little pastries right in front of you. We chose Hazelnut chocolate, Coconut, Chantilly cream and Vanilla. Lovely friends, an evening stroll and fresh cream puffs. Perfection.
There's something about the pending swimsuit season and my increased calorie intake that's not quite meshing, but I love a new food trend and can't deny a delicious treat. Doughnut today, run tomorrow.
